We have reached the end of May and it is time for the state baseball tournament. Unfortunately for the Irish, they will not be participating in the tourney. The Irish came into the Metro League Tournament as one of the number one seeds along with West Seattle. Two quick losses to Eastside Catholic in the first round, and Ballard in the second round knocked them out for good and prevented them a bid to their first state tournament bid since 2019.
With that being said, you cannot take away the great accomplishments the Irish players achieved during the season. Let’s start first with the pitching.
The two primary pitchers for the Irish, senior Simon Adams and junior Brady Foster both had electric seasons. Adams posted an ERA of 0.84, 41 K’s, and an opponent batting average of .119 through 41.2 innings of work. If you don’t know much about baseball, I’ll just say right now, that is amazing.
Foster posted an ERA of 0.82, 35 K’s, and an opponent batting average of .176 through 34 innings pitched. Again, another amazing stat line.
The top batting average for the Irish was Asa Reese, batting a whopping .400 on the year. Senior Joe Githens, and sophomore Vaughan Lowe were very close behind batting in the high .300’s. These boys by the numbers were the best hitters on the team no question.
So, you may ask, why did this team exit so early with such good numbers?
Part of which may be due to the team’s experience. Sure, the team had 6 seniors who played regularly but that’s not even half the team. There were still tons of guys who were sophomores and juniors who are still getting their feet wet at the varsity level.
But with inexperience, comes a bright future.
Guys like Davis Downer and Dominic Skally had great seasons despite their youth. There was the same amount of senior as there were sophomores on this roster which speaks loud volumes about the team’s youth. Unfortunately for the seniors, their last ride couldn’t be a state championship, but the rest of the O’Dea community should be very positive about the future of this team.
