Patrick Galvin Jr. and the Fighting Irish Look to Push for a State Championship
Updated: Feb 23, 2023
SEATTLE- The Fighting Irish clinched a spot in the state playoffs in the Tacoma Dome, Tuesday the 14th, with a 74-58 win over Metro rival Rainier Beach.
“Our team this year has bonded really well. It’s a big family and that all started over the summer in workouts and scrimmages”, says Patrick Galvin Jr.
The Irish are 18-7 up to this point with multiple key wins over rivals Eastside Catholic and Rainier Beach, as well as winning the Torrey Pines Classic in San Diego in December, going 3-1 in the tournament.
Galvin stated, “We’ve been able to pull out close games and have competed at a high level and we look to be able to close out every game from this point on.”
The Irish have put themselves in a great position to win the district championship after falling short in the Metro championship to Rainier Beach.
The Irish have suffered a loss only 7 times this season. Including 3 to metro rival Garfield.
“All we can do is learn from our losses at this point and move on. With it being playoffs, we can’t dwell in the past and our team is extremely confident that we can beat anyone in the state and ultimately cap it off with a state championship”, stated Galvin.
As for how the team has bonded differently from last year, “The energy is completely different, I feel supported by my brothers and coaches and we have a good chemistry rolling into state”, says Galvin.
With a big win last night, February 16th, over 18-2 and #2 ranked Bellevue, the Irish are in the district championship vs Eastside Catholic after the Crusaders knocked off Garfield in the final minutes, in what will now be the 4th matchup of the season against the Irish archrival.
Galvin stated, “We came out confident tonight and trusted each other on both ends early and ultimately I think that helped us get the early lead and maintain the lead throughout the game.”
As for Galvin’s future in basketball, it looks like the 6’5 forward, and Seattle University baseball commit will continue his play into his senior season next year stating, “Playing next year is the plan.”
The Irish now 18-7 are fighting for seeding in the state tournament in Saturday's matchup vs Eastside Catholic at Bellevue college and look to avenge the first-round loss last season and make another run to a state championship.
