Seeing In 3D
SEATTLE – In 11 years, do not be surprised to see the name Davis D. Downer (DDD) on the Wall of Honor. Downer is a star outfielder on the O’Dea Fighting Irish baseball team where he will continue his athletic and academic careers at Washington State University.
The O’Dea Fighting Irish baseball team is standing at 7-7 after a rocky start at the beginning of the season going 0-4. Without Downer the team may still have a losing record. He has put up some his best numbers of his career including an batting average of .412, OBP of .524, and SLG of .588. Downer leads the O’Dea baseball team in all these areas.
This would not have been a possibility for the Irish if Downer did not get introduced to baseball by his father 10 years ago. He fell in love with the sport instantly and got onto Elevate Northwest later down the line where he still plays today.
8 years after being introduced to the sport, Downer was able to commit to play Division 1 collegiate baseball at Washington State University.
“They gave me the best offer I could ask for and I loved the coaches and the enviornment,” Downer mentioned on why he chose WSU.
Post collegiate baseball Downer hopes to make it to Major League Baseball, but if that does not work out he wants to indulge in another one of his passions: bodybuilding.
He has always been committed to the weight room throughout high school and his lifetime. His family is full of athletes so they provided him with an active enviornment. If Downer is not playing baseball, he will be in the weight room either with Coach Paynter at O’Dea, or at his hometown gym in Mukilteo. His current squat max is 405 pounds and his bench max is 285 pounds.
“If baseball doesn’t work out the way I want it to, I will want to try to become a bodybuilder; if that does not work out, then I may enlist into the Marines or become a firefighter,” Downer said.
Aside from baseball, Downer was also a star on the O’Dea football team. As a sophomore, he was a 2nd string linebacker where he found a fair amount of playing time. After playing football for 8 years, he took a break to focus on baseball full time shortly following deciding to play D1 at WSU.
“Football taught me a lot about discipline and gave me a lot of athletic ability. It also gave me a lot of grit,” Davis on how football helped his baseball career.
Downer is the definition of what it means to be an O’Dea athlete. He is a hard worker both on and off the field and excels in anything he does. It will be exciting to see what he accomplishes at WSU and past college.
