Garfield Hates Mondays, But They Sure Love Tuesdays, Thanks To A Domination Over O'Dea By Owen Raup
Updated: Jan 20, 2022
SEATTLE- O’Dea and Garfield have always been bitter rivals when it comes to varsity basketball. Over the past five years, however, Garfield had managed to hold a steady 4-3 record over the Fighting Irish going into Tuesday's match up. A record that had the chance of being leveled with an O’Dea victory, instead grew larger with a humbling loss for the Fighting Irish.
Going into the game ranked sixth in the state with an impressive 9-1 record, had a chance to move ahead of Auburn in the statewide rankings. In order to do so, they would have to come out victorious against Garfield.
Going into the game ranked first in the state, comfortably winning all ten games leading up to Tuesday's grudge match, Garfield had yet to be challenged.
History was in Garfield's favor.
But maybe O’Dea would defy the odds, and David would finally take down Goliath, right?
Wrong.
David was brutally decapitated, set on fire, and castrated by Goliath.
Despite the game being back and forth early on, efforts made on offense by senior guards Takeo Staten-Sylvester and Owen Moriarty were not enough for the Fighting Irish, as Tuesday's 98-61 score line is the worst defeat that the Fighting Irish have faced since losing to Rainier Beach 102-47 in 2015.
However, O'Dea still sit in a comfortable second overall spot in the 3A standings.
The fight only ends when you say it does, and it's not like this is the last time O’Dea will be playing Garfield, possibly not even the last time they play each other this season.
It all depends on how the Fighting Irish decide to finish the fight going forward.
